The Philippines picked a date for its first rocket launch: February 14, 2027

The Philippines now has a date for the first rocket launched from its own soil. February 14, 2027. Officials named Valentine's Day as the target for the test flight of SIKLAB, the government's rocket project, at a press forum in Manila on Wednesday.

The date was chosen, not dictated. Engineers handed Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda a window of February 12 to 15, and he took the middle of it. The launch is being run by his department together with the Philippine Space Agency and the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority, and the rocket goes up from Cagayan in the far north.

It's not really saying on the dot na lilipad po yung rocket dito, but it's more symbolic.

That was Philippine Space Agency Director General Gay Jane Perez, telling reporters the date is something the team is aiming at, not a guarantee the rocket leaves the pad that morning.

Why it matters

The government is selling this as the start of an industry, not a one time stunt. Officials put the prize at 15,800 direct jobs and as much as 3.6 billion dollars a year in economic activity if Cagayan grows into a working spaceport, a place where rockets take off regularly. Cagayan Economic Zone Authority chief secretary Katrina Ponce Enrile is among the officials attached to the plan.

The catch to watch

Nothing has flown yet, and the flight itself is small. This is a sounding rocket, meaning it goes straight up and comes straight back down instead of circling the planet. The Philippine Space Agency says the demonstration will carry a locally made payload of up to two kilograms to a height of at least five kilometers, and that the rocket work is being done with Perigee Aerospace, a South Korean company. Weather and technical trouble can still move the date, and the people who set it said as much on the day they announced it.
