Six Filipino inventions went to Hong Kong. One is an app for people who cannot speak.
The science department sent six homegrown technologies to the first LEAP East Hong Kong, from a wearable cooler to an AI that counts baby chicks.
Six Filipino technologies were put in front of foreign investors in Hong Kong at the first LEAP East Hong Kong 2026. The Department of Science and Technology sent them through its promotion arm, DOST-TAPI, under a program called SPICE, which brings local inventions to international contests and exhibits.
The list is unusually ordinary. Pic-A-Talk is a phone app that lets people with speech difficulties talk using pictures, with a voice that reads the words out loud. Limontene Liquid Pectin, from CirPro Innovations, turns thrown-away calamansi peels into a thickener for food and drinks. KoolGear is a wearable cooler for people who work in the heat. iCOUNT, a college research project that won a DOST invention award this year, uses a camera and a heat sensor to count baby chicks as they are unloaded and to spot the ones that did not survive. The other two are PasaJob, a job referral app that pays users for referrals, and Nutrio Wonder, a fertilizer sprayed on leaves that is made from helpful bacteria instead of chemicals.
Philippine Consul General in Hong Kong Romulo Victor Israel Jr. described the trip as recruitment as much as display.
This is a platform where we can interact with international companies and explore opportunities for our country to develop the innovation industry in the Philippines and to invite more investors to come to the Philippines.
Why it matters
Filipino research usually stops at the award ceremony. A team wins a plaque, the news runs for a day, and the thing never reaches a shelf. These six are solving problems you can point at: a peel that becomes an ingredient, a fan you wear to work, an app for a child who cannot say what hurts. Standing in a room full of buyers is the step that decides whether an invention becomes a product or stays a poster.
The catch to watch
Nothing was sold. DOST-TAPI says the trip produced new international business leads and strategic connections, which are not orders, not partners, and not money. No buyer, contract or amount was named. Six technologies is also a small showing for a country this size. The real test is whether any of the six announces a signed deal in the next few months, and it is fair to hold that against them if none does.
